How to find the right lamp shade

When choosing the perfect lamp shade there are a few considerations. For instance, what type are you looking for? Do you need ceiling lamp shades or floor lamp shades? With a floor or table lamp shade you’ll need to take the base into account as this will impact the size and shape of the shade you choose, whereas with ceiling shades you’ll need to consider the size but in relation to the room. 

What shape lamp shade do I need?

Whether you’re searching for lamp shades for table lamps or floor lights, we recommend that the shape of your shade mirrors the base. So, for example, if you have a round lamp base then a slightly curved, sloping shade like a French drum or empire lamp shade will suit it perfectly. For ceiling lights though, there are no hard and fast rules for the shape you need, instead the style and material you choose will have more of an impact on the atmosphere in the room and the amount of light diffused. For instance, rattan lamp shades can bring modern Scandi style to your home and, as if they’re loosely woven, will produce a broad light spill, whereas fabric lamp shades in velvet or a similar thick material are likely to provide a more targeted glow. 

Do I need large or small lamp shades?

When it comes to choosing the right size lamp shade for table and floor lamps, this depends on the lamp base you’re planning on pairing it with. Here are three handy points to consider. 

  1. The shade diameter should be around equal to the height of your lamp base.
  2. The shade’s height should be about two thirds the base height.
  3. For balanced proportions, we recommend choosing a shade where its widest part is greater than the width of the lamp base. For the perfect size, measure the base’s diameter at its widest point then multiply by two. This will give you your ideal shade diameter.

What style lampshade should I choose?

Finally, once you’re sure of the size and shape you need you can start thinking about the most exciting part – the style. If you want to make them a feature in the room, try opting for bold patterned lamp shades with unusual designs or, for a more minimalist approach, choose contemporary black lamp shades or grey and gold designs which will keep the space looking modern yet elegant.
