How to pick a table lamp for a room

Before you decide on the style you’re searching for, we recommend considering a few practical points when it comes to choosing a table lamp for your home. First, think about the size of your space. Does the lamp need to fit on top of a slim console table in the hallway? Or have you got more room for a large table lamp on a wide sideboard? As a general rule, the widest part of the lamp should be less than the width of the surface it’s sitting on. This means it will sit centrally on the table and bring a balance to the space.

Matching your lamp with the perfect lightbulb is the best way to set the mood in a room. If your lamp is going into a bedroom or sitting room then one with a warm glow will create a cosy, relaxed atmosphere which encourages you to unwind. Whereas in areas such as a home office, you’re more likely to use your lamp as a task light and will benefit from a bright white bulb.

The height of the lamp is also key to getting the overall look just right. If your lamp is too short, then the shade may not appear to cover the bulb and inner frame and less light will be diffused around the room. To avoid this, the bottom of the lampshade should always rest at or below eye level. For example, if your new lamp is placed on a side table in the living room, then the bottom of the shade should be at eye level when you’re sitting on your sofa. This will shield your eyes from the lightbulb’s glare and hide the shade’s frame from view.

Finally, it’s time to consider the part we love most – the style. We recommend picking a lamp which both complements the look of your home as it is now yet also stands the test of time. If you’re drawn to pared-back designs such as Scandinavian style or a cultural fusion like Japandi, then choose a table lamp and shade with a subtle palette of light, neutral tones and natural textures including pale wood, organically shaped ceramic, and soft cotton or linen. For those searching for a bolder style, try a large stand-out lamp base made from coloured glass paired with a jewel velvet shade or one of our signature animal lamps for unique maximalist appeal.

Bedside lamps

There are several points to consider when deciding on the right bedside lamp for your room. In terms of the size, it’s best if the shade’s bottom sits around eye level when in bed so that it will be at the perfect height as a reading light, while also ensuring the glare from the bulb isn’t directly in your eyesight.

Style wise, you can showcase your personal preferences with the lamp and shade you choose. Simple, sculptural shapes made of metals like brass and gold are ideal for minimal, modernist homes. If you’re looking for something more traditional, then a lathe-turned wooden lamp base paired with a classic empire shade with a delicate print is a great choice. In our collection we have a whole host of unique and eclectic styles, from glass lamps which you can pair with velvet shades to lathe-turned wooden and ceramic designs. Think about the bulb you want to use as well. For a soft, warm yellow glow, choose a bulb which is around 2,700 to 3,000 Kelvin. The light it omits will create that cosy atmosphere which you need to lull you into a peaceful night’s slumber.

Desk lamps

Size and adjustability are key when choosing a lamp for your desk. Look for desk lamps which have the functionality to swivel and include adjustable arms – this means you can really target the light for those important tasks on your to-do list. Unlike bedside lamps, you should choose a slightly brighter bulb. You don’t want it to be too clinical, but a cooler white light will enable you to see your work more clearly, especially for any particularly detailed tasks. LED bulbs are the perfect choice as they have a clear, bright light and are also great in terms of energy efficiency.
